Thokozile Portia Kunene

Sr. Thokozile Portia Kunene is a dedicated Professional Nurse and Midwife at OR Tambo Community Health Centre in Diepsloot, serving under the Johannesburg Health District. Renowned for her commitment to patient care and passion for fostering diversity and inclusion, Sr. Kunene is a cornerstone of her community. Her approachable demeanour and excellent communication skills have earned her the trust of both patients and colleagues.

In her role, Sr. Kunene has implemented successful patient management programs that have significantly improved health outcomes across her facility and the broader Johannesburg Health District. Recognising the unique challenges patients from informal settlements face, particularly those in contract and domestic work, she volunteered to start antenatal services as early as 5:00 AM, allowing patients to receive care without missing work. Additionally, she has been instrumental in addressing high teenage pregnancy rates by coordinating after-hours peer education and clinic sessions in local schools.

Sr. Kunene’s proactive approach to healthcare challenges underscores her invaluable contributions to the Department of Health and the Diepsloot community.

Ntombenkosi Dyani, affectionately known as Ntosh, is a Senior Agricultural Advisor at the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development (DALRRD) in Makhanda, Eastern Cape. With over two decades of experience, Ntosh has played a pivotal role in empowering farmers, women, cooperatives, and people with disabilities through sustainable agricultural practices.

Born in Peelton, King Williams Town, Ntosh’s career with DALRRD began in 2003, leading to her promotion in 2019. She provides vital educational outreach across the Sarah Baartman District, collaborating with various agencies to deliver programs on natural resource management, nutrition, food safety, agricultural production, and business development. Her dedication to community engagement and continuous learning has significantly strengthened the local agricultural sector, making her a beacon of leadership and a valued asset to her community.

Thando Kodwa

Indwe Police Station, Eastern Cape

Sergeant Thando Kodwa is a dedicated public servant stationed at Indwe Police Station in the Chris Hani District, Eastern Cape. With a deep-rooted commitment to community service, Sgt. Kodwa not only serves as a police officer but also as a Reverend in the Bantu Congregational Church of Zion, a Champion of Men for Change, and a Circumcision Coordinator.

Since joining the South African Police Service (SAPS) in 2005, Sgt. Kodwa has focused on community-oriented policing, fostering partnerships with schools, traditional leaders, NGOs, and religious institutions to address societal challenges, especially gender-based violence. His leadership in the Men for Change forum and pursuit of a Bachelor of Police Practice demonstrate his dedication to advancing gender equality and enhancing law enforcement practices.

Sgt. Kodwa’s efforts have been recognised with numerous awards, including the SAPS Ten Year Loyal Service Medal and the National Man of the Year award for 2022/2023, solidifying his reputation as an innovative and community-focused leader.
