{"id":896,"date":"2019-09-09T13:56:19","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T13:56:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.integrityicon.org\/?p=896"},"modified":"2019-09-11T13:37:47","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T13:37:47","slug":"integrity-icon-campaigns-hidden-heroes-showing-sa-whats-possible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/integrityicon.org\/es\/integrity-icon-campaigns-hidden-heroes-showing-sa-whats-possible\/","title":{"rendered":"Integrity Icon&#8217;s &#8216;hidden heroes&#8217; showing SA what&#8217;s possible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CAPE TOWN, 6 September \u2013 The state capture and other inquiries have shown that while \u201cintegrity\u201d is ordinarily a four-syllable word, in South Africa it\u2019s often treated as a four-letter word.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not easy to find hope amid a scale of corruption that is almost beyond comprehension \u2013 role models who \u201cserve the people\u201d appear to be in short supply.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Accountability Lab, a global NGO, has found a way to unearth Integrity Icons in countries, which its director, Blair Glencorse, calls a process which involves \u201cnaming and faming\u201d instead of the usual \u201cnaming and shaming\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Accountability Lab acknowledges a lack of integrity \u2013 which leads to corruption, inequality and insecurity \u2013 is a global challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been operating in SA now for about two years, but we have some deep experience here through previously working on the issues of accountability and open government and anti-corruption.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo change the narrative around the negative news that perpetuates the news cycle, particularly around corruption, which has been significant, is a campaign called Integrity Icon,\u201d said Glencorse, who was recently appointed to the World Bank\u2019s Expert Council on Citizen Engagement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is about celebrating good people within public service who are doing the right thing, using public resources well and acting with integrity for the public good.
