We have done so because without a committed and effective public service we cannot achieve social justice, and because in our day-to-day reporting we frequently come across public servants who work tirelessly and make great sacrifices in the public interest.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>On Friday evening last week, Accountability Lab South Africa announced the five winners of its 2022\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/integrityicon.org\/es\/south-africa\/\">Integrity Icon<\/a>\u00a0awards.<\/p>\n<p>This was the fifth year of the awards, established in 2018, which according to Sekoetlane Phamodi, the country director of Accountability Lab, aim \u201cto name and fame some of the many civil servants in South Africa who demonstrate integrity, accountability, and going beyond the call of duty both at work and in their communities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The award winners, nominated by their peers, are public servants who were \u201ccaught doing the right thing and are making government work for our people\u201d, says Phamodi. In 2022, 109 nominations were received and nearly 2,000 people voted for the People\u2019s Choice winner,\u00a0Bongani Eric Siyona, a police officer working for the SAPS in Gqeberha, Nelson Mandela Bay.<\/p>\n<p><i>Watch videos about the five winners:<\/i><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"2022 Integrity Icon South Africa winner - Adell Lebabo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NuIyjSXSQcQ?list=PLKITTNJArDzgQOufxj1CoSonskJnUZ7OU\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In a keynote address, Salomon Hoogenraad-Vermaak, head of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpsa.gov.za\/thepublicservant\/2021\/09\/21\/the-new-technical-assistance-unit-will-bolster-efforts-to-fight-misconduct-in-the-public-service-minister-ayanda-dlodlo\/\">Public Administration Ethics, Integrity and Disciplinary Technical Assistance Unit at the Department of Public Service and Administration<\/a>, congratulated the Icons and invited them to address the department\u2019s National Ethics Officers Forum in 2023 (there are now 340 designated ethics officers across national and provincial government departments, according to Hoogenraad-Vermaak).<\/p>\n<p>Hoogenraad-Vermaak said there is a need to challenge \u201cthe general narrative that all public servants are corrupt\u201d. He emphasised that progress is being made in rooting out corruption in the public service, and strengthening systems that promote ethics and accountability, claiming that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>27 national and 49 provincial government departments are now conducting lifestyle audits;<\/li>\n<li>98% of senior managers are now disclosing their finances using an electronic financial disclosure system for public servants; and that<\/li>\n<li>\u201cWhile it is true that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/businesstech.co.za\/news\/government\/640053\/over-300-government-officials-suspended-with-full-pay-in-south-africa-costing-taxpayers-millions\/\">R140-million has been spent on 304 suspended public servants<\/a>\u00a0who are \u201csitting at home\u201d, three years ago this figure was over R2-billion.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i>Maverick Citizen<\/i>\u00a0has been a firm promoter of the Integrity Icons campaign.
