Her specialty is in primary health care and she works with patients who have been diagnosed with drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB). Sanele is a nurse and midwifery lecturer at the University of Johannesburg. In 2018, she was celebrated by the Mail &amp; Guardian as one of their Top 200 Young South Africans, and in 2019 she was awarded the Gauteng Premier\u2019s Excellence Award for her contribution to the nursing profession.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two nurses enjoyed an enlightening inter-generational conversation about the nursing profession. Their passion and dedication shone through the discussion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kicking off the webinar, Sanele introduced Sister Elizabeth, noting that, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her colleagues commented that she has a great love for patients. She goes as far as using her own resources to go to patients\u2019 homes in order to ensure that patients don\u2019t default on their treatment.\u201d For <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanele, this brought to mind\u00a0 Florence Nightingale and Albertina Sisulu, who were both nurses of integrity who provided services to patients in their homes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;Not all nurses are like that. We require them to come to the clinic, every week or every two weeks which becomes a burden on them. So the easiest way to make sure a patient complies with your treatment is to go to their home<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These visits enable Sister Elizabeth to observe the patients&#8217; home, to see if they have adequate support and to build a rapport with the patient. Through this, patients begin to regard her as part of their family.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cWe are at a time as a country where people have very little faith in public service&#8230; but when we hear of public servants such as yourself [Nurse Elizabeth] it gives us hope.\u201d Sanele Lukhele sings Nurse Elizabeth Mkhondo\u2019s praises.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u2014 Accountability Lab South Africa (@AccountLabSA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AccountLabSA\/status\/1329444547450056714?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 19, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Sister Elizabeth noted: \u201cY<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our attitude determines the outcome of your patient\u2019s care within the public service.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For her, a lack of resources should not stand in the way of doing one&#8217;s best for one&#8217;s patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others from the profession joined the call, and Sanele called for the video to be played to nursing students across the country, to benefit from Sister Elizabeth&#8217;s advice and wisdom gained over her long years of service.
