Nominate them for Integrity Icon. By Sara Hoenes.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/tag\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coronavirus<\/a>\u00a0has changed nearly every aspect of our lives. As we adjust to our new normal, we\u2019ve also had the opportunity to see just how important an ethical and well-functioning local government is.<\/p>\n<p>Most of our attention has been focused on elected, high-level positions, like mayors and governors. Their daily briefings and enforcement of regulations at state and city levels have made\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/leadership-in-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">or not made<\/a>\u2014all the difference in keeping the virus under control.<\/p>\n<p>But what about the government workers who have everyday jobs behind the scenes\u2014in areas like administration, parks and recreation, and sanitation?<\/p>\n<p>In Philadelphia, these city employees have been working tirelessly to keep the city moving despite the current health crisis and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/mayor-kenney-revamped-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">budget cuts<\/a>. Let\u2019s take the opportunity to celebrate those among them who have worked with and pushed for integrity along the way.<\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia\u2019s municipal sanitation workers have kept working, despite conditions that have left\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/6abc.com\/health\/union--100+-sanitation-workers-have-covid-19-as-trash-piles-up\/6325922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over 100 sick<\/a>\u00a0with coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Durrell Rothwell, who recovered from Covid-19,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/city-sanitation-workers-protest-their-treatment-demand-ppe-hazard-pay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">made his voice heard<\/a>\u00a0at a recent protest in LOVE Park where he and his peers rallied for better personal protection equipment, hazard pay and free coronavirus testing. At the same rally, other sanitation workers argued that they are the most unappreciated and underpaid government workers.<\/p>\n<p>Then there are those that work in administration. We don\u2019t necessarily see them everyday, but these heroes are providing critical services during this crisis.<\/p>\n<p>For example, administrative judge\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.com\/thelegalintelligencer\/2018\/09\/05\/commerce-court-leader-talks-new-initiatives-juggling-roles-and-why-the-commerce-program-is-for-nerds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gary Glazer<\/a>\u00a0issued a court order creating a small business aid program that allows struggling enterprises and nonprofits to negotiate with creditors for more time to repay their debts. Officials within the Philadelphia Commerce Department are also raising funds for businesses that have experienced damage or loss from protests and coronavirus closures.<\/p>\n<p>And what about those public servants keeping\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/why-parks-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">public parks<\/a>\u00a0clean and safe so that Philadelphians can spend time outside? The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/tag\/parks-and-recreation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department<\/a>\u00a0recently deployed social-distancing ambassadors to kindly remind park-goers to wear masks and keep six feet away from one another.<\/p>\n<p>Kathryn Ott Lowell, Parks and Recreation commissioner,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/100-extremely-hot-philly-blocks-are-getting-super-soakers-and-other-toys-to-beat-the-heat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">raised $600,000<\/a>\u00a0from private donations to provide Philadelphia\u2019s hottest 100 blocks with patio umbrellas, inflatable pools, misting fans, super soakers, water jugs, water balloons and neck cooling rags.<\/p>\n<p>Some blocks will have mural-making, learning and literacy programs from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/tag\/free-library-of-philadelphia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Free Library of Philadelphia<\/a>\u00a0and other activities offered. These blocks are in some of the lowest-income areas of Philly and don\u2019t have direct access to the city\u2019s 91 spraygrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Now is our chance to recognize these public servants and others like them who are working to make Philly a safer and more equitable city.<\/p>\n<p>In March, The Philadelphia Citizen, along with Accountability Lab and WURD\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/integrity-icon-philly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launched Integrity Icon Philadelphia<\/a>\u2014a contest to \u201cname and fame\u201d honest civil servants.<\/p>\n<p>Until July 31, we\u2019ll\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdSpI-7g-m_YmDBJANUeGpWtOCzxmbDLmwAUSk1KqQtWSU_nA\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">accept nominations<\/a>\u00a0for non-elected government officials from any sector who are high-integrity employees working to help their customers\u2014the citizens of Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re looking for people who put the city and the people of Philadelphia first and act with integrity at all times.
