By Sara Hoenes.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It was in the early days of <a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/coronavirus-news-philadelphia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the coronavirus<\/a>\u00a0that many Philadelphians first heard the name that has now become the go-to for news, advice and information about the deadly virus: Philadelphia Public Health Commissioner\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phila.gov\/departments\/department-of-public-health\/about-us\/staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Thomas Farley<\/a>,<\/p>\n<p>Farley, former New York City Health Commissioner, has been in his post for four years, during which he became best known for touting the benefits of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/tag\/soda-tax-philadelphia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the tax on sugary beverages<\/a>\u00a0and for the uphill battle against the City\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/tag\/opioids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">opioid epidemic<\/a>. But it\u2019s only in these last few months that he has really become Philadelphia\u2019s doctor.<\/p>\n<p>Farley has been behind measures to keep Philadelphians safe\u2014like<a href=\"https:\/\/6abc.com\/philadelphia-coronavirus-covid-19-philly-phialdelphia-2nd-wave\/6279181\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0requiring facial coverings<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/whyy.org\/articles\/why-are-we-so-confused-about-whats-safe-how-did-the-message-get-so-muddled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0pausing reopening phases<\/a>, and<a href=\"https:\/\/philadelphia.cbslocal.com\/2020\/07\/03\/philadelphia-health-commissioner-thomas-farley-coronavirus-july-4th-weekend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0doubling-down<\/a>\u00a0on Covid-19 warnings before 4th of July celebrations. He has provided a mix of sobering reality, admonition, encouragement and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/6abc.com\/covid-19-philadelphia-philly-coronavirus-vaccine-dr-tom-farley\/6292336\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hopefulness<\/a>\u00a0that a vaccine is not too far away.<\/p>\n<p>Public health officials usually don\u2019t enter government service seeking fame and fortune. But for the first time in a long time, people are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2020\/04\/anthony-fauci-coronavirus-crush\/609544\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crushing hard<\/a>\u00a0on honest public officials. Think of Dr. Anthony Fauci, for example, the long-time Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases whose carefully crafted apolitical position has made him the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/americans-most-trust-fauci-cuomo-on-coronavirus-response-insider-poll-2020-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most trusted<\/a>\u00a0government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/21\/opinion\/sunday\/fauci-coronavirus-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">official<\/a>\u00a0in several\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/poll-recession-fears-coronavirus-us-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">polls<\/a>\u00a0when it comes to the coronavirus pandemic\u2014despite recent White House efforts to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-us-canada-53392817\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">discredit<\/a>\u00a0him.<\/p>\n<p>Even before Covid-19, public health employees in Philadelphia were on the frontlines providing primary, preventive and emergency care at clinics throughout the city; setting health policies; and running public service campaigns to help keep residents well.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in addition to all of that, they are the ones collecting and sending out coronavirus updates, making sure people have access to testing, and educating the public about what needs to be done. Just last week, the Health Department launched a new campaign called\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chestnuthilllocal.com\/2020\/07\/13\/city-launches-campaign-to-promote-mask-use\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201c#MaskUpPHL\u201d<\/a>\u00a0to remind Philadelphians that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/photo-essay-you-wear-the-mask-for-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wearing a mask saves lives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The coronavirus pandemic has shed new light on the importance of a well-prepared and transparent public health system. Unfortunately, the adoration shown to Dr. Fauci has not taken hold everywhere. Across the country, local public health officials are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/06\/22\/us\/health-officials-threats-coronavirus\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">resigning in response to threats<\/a>. Others are dealing with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2020\/07\/pandemic-experts-are-not-okay\/613879\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0burnout<\/a>, frustrated and fatigued from experiencing worst-case scenarios and working overtime to course-correct in an environment that has become highly politicized.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s too bad. They are our present-day\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.redbubble.com\/i\/art-print\/DR-Fauci-super-Hero-by-sirius-12456\/46348374.1G4ZT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">superheroes<\/a>, after all. And they should be celebrated.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s your chance to do that: In March, The Philadelphia Citizen, Accountability Lab and WURD Radio, along with other partners, launched<a href=\"https:\/\/thephiladelphiacitizen.org\/integrity-icon-philly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0Integrity Icon Philadelphia<\/a>\u2014a contest to \u201cname and fame\u201d Philadelphia\u2019s most outstanding public servants.<\/p>\n<p>Through July 31, Philadelphians can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSdSpI-7g-m_YmDBJANUeGpWtOCzxmbDLmwAUSk1KqQtWSU_nA\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nominate<\/a>\u00a0any non-elected public official (that is, someone paid with city tax dollars) who demonstrates integrity in public service. At a time when trust in government can mean the difference between life and death, let\u2019s recognize public health heroes who are helping to keep Philadelphians healthy, transparent about information, working to create safe guidelines for reopening, and going above and beyond to make sure that all Philadelphians have access to easy and equitable medical care.<\/p>\n<p>In other places, we\u2019ve seen how relying on the advice of experts has dramatically decreased the number of cases and mitigated the devastating effects of the virus. In New Zealand, for example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/jacinda-ardern-leadership-in-coronavirus-response\/a-53733397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">public trust<\/a>\u00a0in health officials and adherence to guidelines contributed to bringing the case count down to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/goatsandsoda\/2020\/05\/23\/861577367\/messaging-from-leaders-who-have-tamed-their-countrys-coronavirus-outbreaks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nearly zero<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By naming and faming public health heroes in Philadelphia, we can uplift those who are working hard to keep us safe and highlight those we can look to for guidance, so that more people have access to information and care they can trust.<\/p>\n<p>Who is your Integrity Icon?<\/p>\n<p><em>Sara Hoenes is a fellow at Accountability Lab where she is Integrity Icon Philadelphia Lead.
